Delhi Metro Tragedy: Gokulpuri Station Wall Collapse Claims Lives

This morning, a tragic incident occurred at the Gokulpuri Metro Station on Delhi’s Pink Line, leading to the unfortunate loss of a life. A segment of the Gokulpuri Metro’s elevated platform’s eastern-side boundary wall collapsed around 11 am, resulting in the fatal injury of Vinod Kumar, a 53-year-old resident of Karawal Nagar. Ajit Kumar, a Ghaziabad resident, suffered severe injuries while trapped under debris on his two-wheeler, and three others – Monu, Sandeep, and Mohd Tazir – sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.

The collapse also buried at least four two-wheelers. Immediate action was taken, leading to the suspension of two Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials, a manager and a junior engineer. In response to the tragedy, a compensation of ₹25 lakh has been announced for Vinod Kumar’s family, with ₹1 lakh for minor injuries and ₹5 lakh for serious injuries. Video footage circulating on social media showed the police clearing debris from the Gokulpuri Metro collapse site within an hour.

Train services between Maujpur and Shiv Vihar are currently operating on a single line as a safety measure, with the stretch towards the Gokulpuri Up platform temporarily closed. However, the rest of the Pink Line, including Gokulpuri Metro, remains unaffected. The DMRC assured that trains are running normally on the unaffected sections. The police have stated that a case under relevant sections will be registered, and investigations into the Gokulpuri Metro incident are ongoing.
