Maldives Turmoil: Modi Controversy Sparks Tourism Crisis
Maldives is facing a tourism crisis after three officials made disrespectful comments about India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. The controversy began when Modi shared pictures of himself enjoying the beaches of Lakshadweep, an Indian island chain, without mentioning Maldives. In response, three Maldivian officials called Modi names like “clown,” “terrorist,” and a “puppet of Israel.”
The Maldives government quickly distanced itself from these comments, suspending the officials involved. This situation is sensitive as Maldives’ President Mohamed Muizzu is in China to strengthen ties, moving away from the previous “India first” policy.
However, Maldives heavily relies on tourism, and India is a significant contributor, accounting for 11% of tourists last year. The officials’ comments led to an outcry on social media, with Indian tourists canceling trips and calling for a boycott of Maldives using the hashtag #BoycottMaldives.
Prominent figures, including Bollywood actors and cricket players, joined the movement, urging people to explore local destinations with the hashtag #ChaloLakshadweep. In response, the Indian travel site EaseMyTrip suspended flights to Maldives, and the Confederation of All India Traders called for a business suspension with Maldives until an apology or corrective measures were made.
Maldives’ Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer called the officials’ remarks “unacceptable,” emphasizing the country’s commitment to positive dialogue with its partners. The Indian High Commission in Maldives expressed concerns, and experts believe the Maldives government, despite challenges, is unlikely to jeopardize its relationship with India.
